Learning objectives

  • Interpret and use a derivative as a multiplier with units
  • Make numerical approximations of derivatives
  • Use a derivative in applied contexts (local linear approximation)
  • Approximate and use (partial) derivatives for 2-variable functions
  • Consult the main points of the lesson

Before class

  • Finish a rough draft of the CO2 project.
  • Read Hughes-Hallett 2.1, 2.2, 2.3(skip relative rate of change), 9.3.
  • Ponder problems 2.1. 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 24; 2.2 3, 4; 2.3. 4, 6 10, 18, 37-41; 9.3.1, 2, 6, 10, 12.
  • Submit (via Moodle) the assignment described in the course Moodle site (about the preceding ponder problems).

In class

  • Answer questions about CO2 project
  • Approximating and using derivatives: work on problems from the textbook.
